Support for the Impeachment Inquiry into President Trump
53% of Americans support the impeachment inquiry into President Trump; 48% strongly support the inquiry. 45% of Americans oppose the impeachment inquiry, 43% strongly oppose the inquiry. Democrats and Republicans remain divided over the impeachment inquiry, with 93% of Democrats supporting and 93% of Republicans opposing. Pure independents are 53-36 in favor of the inquiry. Swing voters — those who’ve supported candidates from multiple parties in 2016 and 2018, or who plan to in 2020 — are in favor by 60-34.

Support for Impeachment and Removal of President Trump
Support for impeachment and removal of President Trump is also deeply divided along party lines, with 90% of Democrats supporting impeachment and removal of Donald Trump from office, and 95% of Republicans opposing. Overall, 51% of respondents support removing Trump from office (numbers in the chart below are rounded down, but add up to 51). There are some supporters of the impeachment inquiry who stop short of supporting removal. However, virtually everyone who opposes the inquiry also opposes removal.
Breakdown of Opposition to the Impeachment Inquiry
Among those who are opposed to the impeachment inquiry, 68% believed the allegations were false; 11% think they’re true but not impeachable. The other 21% wrote in responses; by far the most common word in these responses was “Democrats.” 89% of Republicans who get most of their impeachment news from Fox opposed the inquiry because they think the allegations aren’t true; 59% of other Republicans say the same.
Change Research surveyed 971 likely general election voters nationwide. The margin of error as traditionally calculated is ± 3.1% for the full sample. Change Research reaches voters via targeted online ads that point people to an online survey instrument.
